Mi Gu - fastest way to make a steamed buns at home 米糕/馒头

My son love this steamed bun called "Mi Gu". Actually it was a plain sweet steam bun similar to "Man Tou". He just like it as plain with no fillings inside, he just love it rather than bread. This post is my very first making of "Mi Gu", just play with it and it turn out nice.

This recipe required very simple step and only needs a 20 minutes proof and can direct steam from cold water for another 20 minutes. Due to this reason, I love to do this and make it as breakfast and snack for my son to bring to school. I am very happy and enjoy that seeing him bring back an empty food container from school every time when he had "Mi Gu" for his break at school.

You can omit the pink water brushing, leave it as plain will be nice too.

ingredients: (make 6 pcs)

300g all purpose flour
75g sugar
1 tsp active dry yeast
160g water
1 tsp oil
  1. mix all ingredients except oil and knead to form a smooth dough
  2. add oil & knead well & more smooth surface, rest dough for 5 minutes
  3. divide dough to equal 6 parts, roll to small round dough, shape as you like. Line shaped bun into your steamer
  4. rest another round for 20 minutes in the steamer
  5. steam bun from cold water for 20 minutes, after water boil turn to medium heat to continue steaming
  6. never open lid after 20 minutes (buns will shrink when you open the lid), let it stay for 2-3 minutes then open the lid and take out the buns to cool
