Bak Kut Teh 肉骨茶

Can't see the meat down the bowl... my mistake on decoration but this is a family style BAK KUT TEH.

This is not the first time I cook Bak Kut Teh at home, now finally I get the chance to post it in here.
Another easy recipe to cook for your family. ONE POT COOK!!

All you have to do is to buy a pack of Bak Kut Teh herbs in hypermarket or chinese herbs store. But remember to buy the correct brand... "A1 Bak Kut Teh". Others than that may find different for my family taste. Especially my husband and my little Brian. My son loves Bak Kut Teh a lot, although he is just 2 years old, he can finish a bowl of rice with Bak Kut Teh soup alone.

Another great thing about this Bak Kut Teh is they include the recipe printed on the packet! Although I didn't follow their recipe exactly.

Ingredients: (serve to 3 - 4 person)

1 pack of A1 Bak Kut Teh & herbs

1 whole big garlic, prefer smoked garlic
10 cups (3 litre) of water
1 pc pork belly
2 pcs of pork intestine (prefer double insert)
1 pack puff tofu, deep fried tofu 豆腐泡(cut to half)
1 can button mushroom (cut to half)
1 can golden mushroom
1 stack parsley (chopped)
some lettuce or other vegetable that you like

seasoning:

2 tbsp oyster sauce
2 tbsp light soy sauce
1 tbsp dark soy sauce *you may cut down to 1/2 tbsp or less if you like the soup to be clearer
a pinch of salt
a pinch of sugar/rock sugar

  1. first you need to put Bak Kut Teh & herbs & garlics into a big pot with 10 cups of water, bring to boil for 1 hour.
  2. after 1 hour, put in pork belly & pork intestine into boiling pot. Switch to medium heat and keep boiling for another 45 minutes. If you put in pork ribs or other with bone, then is better to boil for 1 hour or more.
  3. take out all the meat and cut at the size you want to serve.
  4. put in all the sauce and add more light soy sauce & salt if you need more salty taste in your soup.
  5. put in button mushroom and puff tofu and simmer for 15 minutes or the puff tofu get soften. Take out puff tofu and serve it at another small bowl.
  6. finally put in golden mushroom & lettuce to simmer for a while and the dish is ready to serve.
